Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart – Creekside’s annual Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart events are quickly approaching!  As part of Science Week, all students will hear presentations from the American Heart Association on January 25;  these special assemblies will serve as a Kickoff/Pep Rally to signify the start of our annual fundraising efforts for the American Heart Association.  Paperwork for Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart will be sent home on Jan. 25 or shortly thereafter, so please be on the lookout for this information!  Families can get a head start on registering and raising funds online by visiting heart.org/jump – If you register online, please be sure to choose the Creekside Elementary in Durham, NC (there are other “Creekside Elementary” schools in other states, so pay attention to which one you choose!).  Students who raise funds online before Jan. 25 will be recognized at the Kickoff event and will also be eligible for special prizes (not available otherwise).  Students in grades K-2 can only register for Jump Rope for Heart while students in grades 3-5 have the option of Jump Rope or Hoops.  More information will be given to students in upcoming PE classes but the main message is this:  Register and get donations early and you’ll be rewarded!  Again, register online at: heart.org/jump  We hope to raise over $10,000 and every little bit helps.  Thanks!

Crayola Color Cycle Program at Creekside Continues – We are excited to report that we are going to continue the marker recycling program started last year in conjunction with Crayola. It’s called CrayolaColorCycle – an amazing program devised to turn used markers into energy!  Last year Creekside recycled 2,148 markers.  Let’s see if we can beat that number this year!!
All around Creekside Elementary students and teachers will be collecting used markers (all brands of plastic markers, not just Crayola markers, that includes dry erase markers and highlighters),  that are ready to be discarded. The markers will then be sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more!
Please help support our efforts by sending your kids in with any used markers you may have around the house. Drop-off boxes will be located in each classroom for your child to deposit the markers.  These boxes will remain in the classrooms throughout the year for continued marker recycling.
Thank you in advance for participating! With the help of parents like you across the country, the Crayola ColorCycle program can keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year.

  Volunteer Opportunities:

Do you like to sell? Are you results driven? Do you have
connections in the community? If so we want you!
The Auction and Raffle is held in May in conjunction with the Spring Carnival.  Funds raised help offset the cost of this fun family and community event.
We need volunteers to visit stores, meet people, email and mail letters to vendors, pick up raffle and auction items.
You’ll have the freedom to do this on your own schedule!!

The Creekside Odyssey of the Mind teams are looking for volunteers to become trained judges.  If you are interested in learning about Odyssey of the Mind, this is a wonderful opportunity to see how it works and to see if it would be a good fit for your child in the coming years!
There is a judges training on February 18 and the competition is March 4.
Please contact Jess Hammond (jessica.hammond@dpsnc.net) for more information.

Girls on the Run is in need of Spring Session Coaches!!!  The Creekside Girls on the Run team needs coaches for the spring session. We have had several wonderful teachers coach in the past 2 years but they are no longer able to volunteer. We need at least 2 coaches to sign up. GOTR meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2:30-3:45 pm, and is open to 3rd-5th graders. Coaches can be parents or siblings of students as well as volunteers unrelated to Creekside. All coaches will have a background check and training. For more information, please contact ahobeik@gmail.com. **Without coaches Creekside will no longer have a GOTR team! GOTR has served a large number of students in the past and we would love for it to continue at Creekside.**

*Creekside is partnering with World Wear Project, whose mission is to provide wearable and affordable shoes to third world countries while benefiting United States’ landfills by reducing refuse by millions of pounds.

  • Athletic shoes (NO cleats)
  • Leather shoes
