Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart
Kicks off on Thursday, January 25
Creekside’s annual Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart events start this week!  As part of Science Week, all students will hear presentations from the American Heart Association on January 25;  these special assemblies will serve as a Kickoff/Pep Rally to signify the start of our annual fundraising efforts for the American Heart Association.
Paperwork for Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart will be sent home on Jan. 25 or shortly thereafter, so please be on the lookout for this information!  Families can get a head start on registering and raising funds online by visiting heart.org/jump – If you register online, please be sure to choose the Creekside Elementary in Durham, NC (there are other “Creekside Elementary” schools in other states, so pay attention to which one you choose!).  Students who raise funds online before Jan. 25 will be recognized at the Kickoff event and will also be eligible for special prizes (not available otherwise).  Students in grades K-2 can only register for Jump Rope for Heart while students in grades 3-5 have the option of Jump Rope or Hoops.  More information will be given to students in upcoming PE classes but the main message is this:  Register and get donations early and you’ll be rewarded!
Register online at: heart.org/jump
Our goal is to raise $10,000 and every little bit helps.
 kindness
Creekside Elementary will be participating in
“The Great Kindness Challenge”!!

During the week of January 30th to February 3rd , our Little Eagles (and Big Eagles too!) will express acts of kindness to one another.
Each student will be given a checklist of 50 kind deeds to do for the week (and beyond).  Kindergarten students will receive a Junior edition with 12 kind deeds to do.
Please see the calendar for the daily themes and activities.
Our Eagles have very caring hearts so let’s encourage them to be kind to everyone they see!
More details are included in the parent letters and calendar that have been sent in your student’s Monday Folder.
If you have any questions please contact
Tonya Jackson Graham or Wanda Matthews.
Thank you for helping our Eagles SOAR!!

crayola

Crayola Color Cycle Program at Creekside Continues – We are excited to report that we are going to continue the marker recycling program started last year in conjunction with Crayola. It’s called CrayolaColorCycle – an amazing program devised to turn used markers into energy!  Last year Creekside recycled 2,148 markers.  Let’s see if we can beat that number this year!!
All around Creekside Elementary students and teachers will be collecting used markers (all brands of plastic markers, not just Crayola markers, that includes dry erase markers and highlighters),  that are ready to be discarded. The markers will then be sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more!
Please help support our efforts by sending your kids in with any used markers you may have around the house. Drop-off boxes will be located in each classroom for your child to deposit the markers.  These boxes will remain in the classrooms throughout the year for continued marker recycling.
Thank you in advance for participating! With the help of parents like you across the country, the Crayola ColorCycle program can keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year.

  Volunteer Opportunities:

The Auction and Raffle Committee
still needs your help!!!

The Auction and Raffle is held in May in conjunction with the Spring Carnival.  Funds raised help offset the cost of this fun family and community event.
We need volunteers to visit stores, meet people, email and mail letters to vendors, pick up raffle and auction items.
You’ll have the freedom to do this on your own schedule!!
Interested? Email us at Creeksideraffle@gmail.com

The Creekside Odyssey of the Mind teams are looking for volunteers to become trained judges.  If you are interested in learning about Odyssey of the Mind, this is a wonderful opportunity to see how it works and to see if it would be a good fit for your child in the coming years!
There is a judges training on February 18 and the competition is March 4.
Please contact Jess Hammond (jessica.hammond@dpsnc.net) for more information.

*Creekside is partnering with World Wear Project, whose mission is to provide wearable and affordable shoes to third world countries while benefiting United States’ landfills by reducing refuse by millions of pounds.
To benefit this project, we are collecting clean and wearable shoes (no stains, holes, or overly worn). World Wear Project will accept the following types of shoewear for women, men and children:

  • Athletic shoes (NO cleats)
  • Leather shoes
  • Dress shoes
  • Casual shoes
  • Canvas shoes will NOT be accepted
Be on the lookout for the cardboard bins inside Creekside so you can donate those old shoes you have hanging around that you have been waiting for an opportunity to give away!
It’s NEVER too late to join the Creekside PTA!
