International Night was a SOARING Success!!!
We enjoyed live performances from Creekside students, a fun and engaging West African drumming session, an amazing Tae Kwon Do demonstration, and wonderful music from our favorite Mariachi band. We also made Skype calls to Australia, Cameroon, and China, and toured incredibly interesting cultural exhibits hosted by our international families in the media center. While enjoying the classroom projects, including the greeting video from our international Eagles, we feasted on delicious international foods brought in by our families, Chirba Chirba, Makus Empanadas, Knish-a-licious, Marcos pizza and our very own Chef Bridgette Harper-Reid.
A special thanks to Nathalie O’Malley, Mary Huaman, Genna Stinson-Miller, Elina Urli Hodges, Amy King, Amy Rublein, Ms. Judd, Ms. Jackson, the After School and Custodial Staff and the many Parent Volunteers for their support in making this event a success and one of Creekside’s best traditions.
We would like to post pictures on our PTA website. Please share your pictures of the evening, and send them via email to Nathalie at tissaire2@gmail.com.

Help Save Art, PE and Music Specials at Creekside!!
(the following is paraphrased from a letter written by a DPS Teacher)
What you need to know…
In 2016, the General Assembly passed legislation which would limit the number of students in K-3 classrooms beginning in the 2017-18 school year. Unfortunately, to lower K-3 class sizes, someone has to hire more K-3 teachers, and the General Assembly is offering NO funding for that. The class size caps are an unfunded mandate, which means the cost of additional K-3 teachers must be paid by local school districts. As many of you are aware, North Carolina’s public schools are already existing on a starvation budget. In 2016, our state ranked 43rd in per pupil expenditure (PPE) nationally. Many counties (including Durham County) have been subsidizing the state’s inadequate PPE by using rainy day funds and discretionary budgets. Now that money is gone. Local districts have no money to spend. The state is offering no money to help. So, to lower K-3 class sizes, many districts will have no choice but to cut some current positions in order to fund the new classroom positions.
What positions will the schools cut? The Specials teachers: the folks who teach Art, Music, PE and Languages.
What you can do…

Our Auction and Raffle will be held in April prior to the Spring Carnival (Friday, April 28th). Funds raised help offset the cost of the Carnival, a fun family and community event.
We need volunteers to visit stores, meet people, email and mail letters to vendors, pick up raffle and auction items.
Also, if you or someone you know has a business or service and would like to donate to our PTA’s Spring Carnival Raffle and Auction, please contact us at creeksideraffle@gmail.com. The business will be advertised to the families of over 850 students at Creekside. This is a great way to market your business AND support our school!
To benefit this project, we are collecting clean and wearable shoes (no stains, holes, or overly worn). World Wear Project will accept the following types of shoe wear for women, men and children:
- Athletic shoes (NO cleats)
- Leather shoes
- Dress shoes
- Casual shoes
- Canvas shoes will NOT be accepted
Crayola Color Cycle Program at Creekside Continues – We are excited to report that we are going to continue the marker recycling program started last year in conjunction with Crayola. It’s called CrayolaColorCycle – an amazing program devised to turn used markers into energy! Last year Creekside recycled 2,148 markers. Let’s see if we can beat that number this year!!
All around Creekside Elementary students and teachers will be collecting used markers (all brands of plastic markers, not just Crayola markers, that includes dry erase markers and highlighters), that are ready to be discarded. The markers will then be sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more!
Please help support our efforts by sending your kids in with any used markers you may have around the house. Drop-off boxes will be located in each classroom for your child to deposit the markers. These boxes will remain in the classrooms throughout the year for continued marker recycling.
Thank you in advance for participating! With the help of parents like you across the country, the Crayola ColorCycle program can keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year.
Joining is easy… click here: bit.ly/JoinCESPTA
$10 each ($5 for staff)
Please continue to support the businesses that support our school!
