Also, mark your calendar and please plan to join us at Creekside Science Night on Thursday, January 26th from 6-8pm for a family-friendly, hands-on, multi-disciplinary celebration of science!  We have lots of fantastic presenters lined up to show you what kind of great science is happening right here in our community.  Come explore robots, biology, fossils, exercise, chemistry, mechanics, physics, forestry, astronomy and more.  Hope to see you there!Student project registration forms:

Announcements:
4th Grade Music Performance CANCELLED for 1/19 – New date TBD

Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart – Creekside’s annual Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart events are quickly approaching!  As part of Science Week, all students will hear presentations from the American Heart Association on January 25;  these special assemblies will serve as a Kickoff/Pep Rally to signify the start of our annual fundraising efforts for the American Heart Association.  Paperwork for Jump Rope and Hoops for Heart will be sent home on Jan. 25 or shortly thereafter, so please be on the lookout for this information!  Families can get a head start on registering and raising funds online by visiting heart.org/jump – If you register online, please be sure to choose the Creekside Elementary in Durham, NC (there are other “Creekside Elementary” schools in other states, so pay attention to which one you choose!).  Students who raise funds online before Jan. 25 will be recognized at the Kickoff event and will also be eligible for special prizes (not available otherwise).  Students in grades K-2 can only register for Jump Rope for Heart while students in grades 3-5 have the option of Jump Rope or Hoops.  More information will be given to students in upcoming PE classes but the main message is this:  Register and get donations early and you’ll be rewarded!  Again, register online at: heart.org/jump  We hope to raise over $10,000 and every little bit helps.  Thanks!

Crayola Color Cycle Program at Creekside Continues – We are excited to report that we are going to continue the marker recycling program started last year in conjunction with Crayola. It’s called CrayolaColorCycle – an amazing program devised to turn used markers into energy!  Last year Creekside recycled 2,148 markers.  Let’s see if we can beat that number this year!!
All around Creekside Elementary students and teachers will be collecting used markers (all brands of plastic markers, not just Crayola markers, that includes dry erase markers and highlighters),  that are ready to be discarded. The markers will then be sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more!
Please help support our efforts by sending your kids in with any used markers you may have around the house. Drop-off boxes will be located in each classroom for your child to deposit the markers.  These boxes will remain in the classrooms throughout the year for continued marker recycling.
Thank you in advance for participating! With the help of parents like you across the country, the Crayola ColorCycle program can keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year.

From Mr. Slavin, science specialist, Creekside Elementary:
The 1st, 3rd and 4th grades will be studying about the moon, earth and solar system during the next nine weeks. And 5th grade will be studying the weather, which is impacted by the moon. This is a great event run by the Morehead Planetarium to elaborate the learning experience for any age!
Skywatching at Jordan Lake
viewing: Saturn, Venus, Moon, Mars
Nov 5, 2016  7:00pm to 9:00pm
Ebenezer Church Recreation Area
Morehead Planetarium hosts free skywatching sessions every month (weather permitting). Morehead educators and CHAOS members (from Chapel Hill Astronomical & Observational Society) bring telescopes and guide you through fun observations of stars, planets, moons, nebulae and other celestial objects. You might even see a few meteors!
WHAT HAPPENS AT A SKYWATCHING SESSION?
Skywatching sessions are very informal and family-friendly. Each session is scheduled for two hours, but you can arrive and leave at any time during the session. During the evening, you might do any of these things: peek through telescopes for up-close views of celestial objects, take a laser-guided “star tour” of the night sky and learn where to look for major constellations.

Skywatching sessions are at Ebenezer Church Recreation Area, part of Jordan Lake State Recreation Area. This site has restrooms, a picnic shelter and a sandy beach area. You’ll find the telescopes at the far (west) end of the parking lot.
Check the Morehead Planetarium website for more information and for weather updates/cancellation.
