  • Athletic shoes (NO cleats)

Survey: Homework and Internet Availability
Nationally, 7 in 10 teachers assign homework that requires internet access. But an estimated five million households with school-age children do not have internet access at home. Students that fall into this “homework gap”—households where internet access is limited or unavailable—lag behind in education and are less competitive in the workforce.

But if you’re a parent with children in North Carolina’s K-12 schools you already know what happens when your children and/or their classmates can’t meaningfully access the internet.

Many of you spend hours each week driving your children to a nearby McDonalds or Starbucks to use their Wi-Fi because internet is not available to your house or it’s too expensive. Or trek to the local library multiple times a week so your kids can use the computers because your digital device is broken, being used by one of your other children, or you don’t have one at home because buying one doesn’t fit in your budget.

The State of North Carolina wants to help ensure no child in the K-12 schools falls into the homework gap. But to do so, the State needs to know how widespread the homework gap is and potential challenges students face in accessing digital resources.

To identify this data, our partners, the Broadband Infrastructure Office and the Friday Institute, are conducting a survey of North Carolina households with K-12 students. We would like to encourage you to take the survey so policy makers and education stakeholders can design solutions to this issue.

The anonymous, short survey is available in English and Spanish and can be found here K-12 Internet Access at Home Survey (Encuesta de Accesso a Internet K-12 en el Hogar) (or at below link).
It remains open until April 30, 2017.

Should you have any questions, concerns, or feedback, you can reach out to the Broadband Infrastructure Office directly at: broadband@nc.gov or (919) 754-6695.

Crayola Color Cycle Program at Creekside Continues – We are excited to report that we are going to continue the marker recycling program started last year in conjunction with Crayola. It’s called CrayolaColorCycle – an amazing program devised to turn used markers into energy!  Last year Creekside recycled 2,148 markers.  Let’s see if we can beat that number this year!!
All around Creekside Elementary students and teachers will be collecting used markers (all brands of plastic markers, not just Crayola markers, that includes dry erase markers and highlighters),  that are ready to be discarded. The markers will then be sent to a facility where they will be converted into clean fuel. This fuel can be used to power vehicles, heat homes, cook meals and more!
Please help support our efforts by sending your kids in with any used markers you may have around the house. Drop-off boxes will be located in each classroom for your child to deposit the markers.  These boxes will remain in the classrooms throughout the year for continued marker recycling.
Thank you in advance for participating! With the help of parents like you across the country, the Crayola ColorCycle program can keep tons of plastic out of landfills each year.

International Night was a SOARING Success!!!
We enjoyed live performances from Creekside students, a fun and engaging West African drumming session, an amazing Tae Kwon Do demonstration, and wonderful music from our favorite Mariachi band.  We also made Skype calls to Australia, Cameroon, and China, and toured incredibly interesting cultural exhibits hosted by our international families in the media center.  While enjoying the classroom projects, including the greeting video from our international Eagles, we feasted on delicious international foods brought in by our families, Chirba Chirba, Makus Empanadas, Knish-a-licious, Marcos pizza and our very own Chef Bridgette Harper-Reid.

A special thanks to Nathalie O’Malley, Mary Huaman, Genna Stinson-Miller, Elina Urli Hodges, Amy King, Amy Rublein, Ms. Judd, Ms. Jackson, the After School and Custodial Staff and the many Parent Volunteers for their support in making this event a success and one of Creekside’s best traditions.

We would like to post pictures on our PTA website.  Please share your pictures of the evening, and send them via email to Nathalie at tissaire2@gmail.com.

Help Save Art, PE and Music Specials at Creekside!!
(the following is paraphrased from a letter written by a DPS Teacher)

What you need to know…
In 2016, the General Assembly passed legislation which would limit the number of students in K-3 classrooms beginning in the 2017-18 school year. Unfortunately, to lower K-3 class sizes, someone has to hire more K-3 teachers, and the General Assembly is offering NO funding for that. The class size caps are an unfunded mandate, which means the cost of additional K-3 teachers must be paid by local school districts. As many of you are aware, North Carolina’s public schools are already existing on a starvation budget. In 2016, our state ranked 43rd in per pupil expenditure (PPE) nationally. Many counties (including Durham County) have been subsidizing the state’s inadequate PPE by using rainy day funds and discretionary budgets. Now that money is gone. Local districts have no money to spend. The state is offering no money to help. So, to lower K-3 class sizes, many districts will have no choice but to cut some current positions in order to fund the new classroom positions.
What positions will the schools cut? The Specials teachers: the folks who teach Art, Music, PE and Languages.
What you can do…
(1) Email the Education Committee members and tell them you want arts education for your children and that you want them to pass HB 13. The contact information for these members is:

(2) Sign the online petition put out by the NCAE asking the General Assembly to pass HB 13 AND raise our per pupil expenditure to the national average.
https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/pass-house-bill-13-to-save-teachers-increase-per-pupil-funding-to-national-average?source=direct_link

(3) Stay informed about HB 13 and make sure your friends, neighbors and co-workers do, too! Share the link above to the online petition. Tell everyone what your child’s school and what the arts mean to you.

Volunteer Opportunities:

The Auction and Raffle Committee still needs your help!!!
Our Auction and Raffle will be held in April prior to the Spring Carnival (Friday, April 28th). Funds raised help offset the cost of the Carnival, a fun family and community event.
We need volunteers to visit stores, meet people, email and mail letters to vendors, pick up raffle and auction items.
Also, if you or someone you know
has a business or service and would like to donate to our PTA’s Spring Carnival Raffle and Auction, please contact us at creeksideraffle@gmail.com.  The business will be advertised to the families of over 850 students at Creekside. This is a great way to market your business AND support our school!
Creekside is partnering with World Wear Project, whose mission is to provide wearable and affordable shoes to third world countries while benefiting United States’ landfills by reducing refuse by millions of pounds.
To benefit this project, we are collecting clean and wearable shoes (no stains, holes, or overly worn). World Wear Project will accept the following types of shoe wear for women, men and children:
  • Athletic shoes (NO cleats)
  • Leather shoes
  • Dress shoes
  • Casual shoes
  • Canvas shoes will NOT be accepted
Be on the lookout for the cardboard bins inside Creekside so you can donate those old shoes you have hanging around that you have been waiting for an opportunity to give away!

odyssey-of-the-minds odyssey
Congratulations to our Primary (K-2) Odyssey Team on their outstanding performance at the NC Odyssey of the Mind Eastern Region (NCOME) Primary Tournament at Wake Technical Community College last weekend.  Our seven team members excelled with their “Spontaneous Problem” in which they had to verbally respond to a prompt given by the judges after one minute of thinking time. They also put on a creative performance featuring “Star Wars Animals Who Are Rich.” Coach Christie Masinick is especially proud of the teamwork and good sportsmanship that the kids exhibited on Saturday.  They were great representatives of Creekside Elementary School!
We look forward to hearing about the experience of our 3 Division I (Grades 3-5) Odyssey teams when they compete on March 4!
Creekside Tile Wall/Square 1 Art Update:
Special thanks to Creekside grandparent, Warren Wehmann, for adding 45 new Square 1 Art tiles to our school’s tile wall this week. If you ordered tiles for your children, feel free to check out their fine work on display down the 1st grade hallway (where there are two tile walls, one on each end of the hall).

Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart
Is Underway!!!
Jump Rope for Heart Update:
We’re so proud of the Creekside Family’s efforts to collect donations for the American Heart Association!  So far, our school has raised over $5,000 for Jump Rope for Heart — way to go!  We are already halfway to our goal of $10,000 —  Terrific!  Please remember that we will collect donations until the beginning of March, so… there is still plenty of time to donate and get involved!  In addition, note that online donations earn more prizes than cash or check donations.
Families may donate online at http://www.heart.org/jump.  Students raising $10 or more, online, will get to visit a special “Treasure Box” during PE class whereupon they can choose a special, extra prize to add to their lanyard.  If students don’t already have their lion and lanyard, they may donate $5 to get their lion and lanyard on Tuesdays or Thursdays, during their lunch time, at the table outside of the cafeteria.

Parents are encouraged to volunteer to help with the lunch time lion distribution table and can sign-up here:  www.SignUpGenius.com/go/10C0D44AFA92DA3F49-volunteers.

Special Edition Eagle Blast

February 3, 2017

We need your help NOW!

Legislation has been passed (HB 13) that addresses Class Size and Teacher Allotments. The result of this bill could mean the elimination of the Elementary Art, Music and PE programs across the state starting with the 2017-2018 school year.

What we know:

  • The General Assembly passed a bill (HB 13) that lowers the limits of class size with no waivers for expanding those allotments.
  • No additional funding was provided to pay for the projected 102 additional teachers Durham would need to hire, to be in compliance with the law. Schools across North Carolina may be forced to cut or reduce programs to cover that expense. The areas affected are ART, MUSIC and PE.
  • A new bill was introduced on Wednesday (1/25) that tweaked these numbers a bit, but not enough to keep our Arts and PE programs across NC.
  • The unintended cost of this bill did not include funding Durham’s 102 additional classroom spaces, purchasing furniture, resources and more.

Durham Public Schools’ Board of Education finds this decision unacceptable and is encouraging our PARENTS, COMMUNITY AND KIDS to call/ write/ draw/ send messages ANY WAY THEY CAN to inform the General Assembly that what may have sounded like a good idea, is having a major, negative impact on our schools.

DPS is also committed to keeping our programs as best we can, as we are described as the “STAND UP, STAND OUT” (Minnie Forte Brown) school system. We are not afraid to speak up, and to craft our programs that address the needs of the whole, well rounded child.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

Write, draw, call, email…

1. General Assembly in Raleigh saying “SAVE THE ART, MUSIC AND PE PROGRAMS IN OUR STATE” and revise the allotment/class size bill.
Durham County House and Senate Representatives can be found here

2. Durham Public Schools’ Board of Education to say “THANK YOU” for speaking up and being so supportive.
Email Address’ can be found here

3. Durham’s Legislators to say thank you as we have been told support our well-rounded education programs with no program cuts.
Your Local Representative can be found by entering your zip/addresshere

Please help our legislators see how important
Art, Music and PE are to our children,
our schools and our community!

Jump Rope for Heart and Hoops for Heart
Is Underway!!!
Jump Rope for Heart Update: Creekside has already raised over $2,000 for the American Heart Association.  Students and families who want to make donations are encouraged to do so online at www.heart.org/jump — online donations automatically get more “Thank You Gifts” (prizes) than cash or check donations.  So, we encourage you to donate online!  Parents DO NOT need to send in the “coupon” for students to get their $5 lion — as long as we receive the donation, students will get the lion! Students who are only interested in the $5 donation/lion prize can give their cash/collection envelopes to their classroom teacher OR they can bring these items to the gym when their class has PE.  Students may also bring in their donations on Tuesdays/Thursdays and turn them in at lunch time (table will be set up outside the cafeteria).  Any cash/check donations need to be labeled with the child’s full name, grade level, and classroom teacher name. Due to the size of our school and the lag in the Jump Rope for Heart online system, the turnaround time for students getting their lanyards and instant prizes (lion, elephant, or zebra) is typically one to three days.  Please encourage your child to be patient — we work as quickly as we can to get students their prizes! Any other prizes earned (t-shirts, basketballs, jump ropes, etc.) will be ordered from the AHA after Jump Rope for Heart is over — the final date for collections will be sometime in early March. So, we’re accepting donations for the next month or so and there is plenty of time to participate.  Please join us in being Heart Heroes and thank you for supporting the American Heart Association!  Let’s surpass our goal of $10,000!
Register online at: heart.org/jump
Our goal is to raise $10,000 and every little bit helps.

Volunteers are needed to collect donations at the Jump Rope for Heart Table outside the Cafeteria every Tuesday and Thursday for the month of February. Please click on the sign-up genius link below and select a time-slot that works with your schedule.
(If you are available on a day other than a Tuesday or Thursday, please contact Ms Andrews to coordinate)
